Austin (con't)
Austin: Day 3
Great afternoon in Austin. Met Paige, my couchsurfing contact, who spent the entire afternoon driving me around local Austin. Got to see some great neighborhoods I would never have seen in South Austin, ate at some local restaurants, waaay off the main drag. As my first attempt at using Couchsurfing, I give it a big thumbs up.
Driving around with her was an adventure (what do you expect when riding around in a Cavalier covered with wavy decorations and "Be Mindful" written across the steering wheel). On my way out I was reading Kinky Friedman's guide to Austin, turns out Paige used to work on Kinky's gubernatorial campaign and spent two weeks on the road with him. I guess that now puts me only two degrees away from Kinky adding to the two degree from Kevin Bacon. I don't know if that helps Kinky get closer to Kevin.
The conference kicked off tonight with a decent reception. Glad to see lots of familiar faces in town. After the reception we were lead on a "preview tour" of Austin. A little bit of a letdown since I'd previewed most of the stops the night before. Ended up at Club deVille with a group of mostly other scholarship folks, mostly other LIS students and a few working pros.
*******
I don't get these guys who blog the whole time during a conference. I've been offline the last few days since I didn't feel like lugging the laptop from campus to the hotel. They don't have wireless. Evenings are spent with people. Not blogging.
Conference: good
Last night went to the Broken Spoke, a painful reminder of what a bad dancer I am. Meanwhile all the cowboys were having a good time. We were greeted at the door by the Kinky for Gov. committee. I'm bringing extra bumper stickers back.
Heading out to South Austin again this evening.
