On the road.

Item One

Dear C-U Taxi. Really this isn't all that hard. You own some cars and vans. People call you and ask you to take them places. They give you money for this. Sometimes people are drunk off their asses and can't drive themselves. Its not to hard to find them, since the bars are located in only a few places. Other times people call you waaaay in advance. These people ususally are on a schedule. They've got to be somewhere. It might be a meeting or say to catch a plane. These people appreciate it when you show up on time. And its also helpful to show up at the right place. This seems easy to. Person Z is going FROM point A TO point B. It's a little silly to show up at Point B first, Person Z won't be there until you bring them.

Friends, countryman, librarians. If you need a ride to the airport, please just call me. I'm very promt and take payment in liquid forms of currency (not at the time of course, it's a pay-later kinda system. Unless it's 7AM and you hand me a steaming cup of coffee).

Item Two

Chicago as a transportation hub made sense in the 19th C. when people rode around in big heavy trains. The wind didn't really bother trains that weigh several tons. Whomever decided to put America's busiest airport in the WINDY city is an idiot. Let's review:

AIRplanes need air to fly.
WIND is made of up of AIR moving around really fast.
While airplanes do move around really fast, they don't take well to wind that's doing the same. Especially during that tricky part called "LANDING" when airplanes leave the air and come back to the ground.
Why it seems like a good idea to put the two together is a mystery to me. There must be an interesting story behind it. Chicagoians? What have ye to say?

Oh wait...I did just pay for internet acccess. Let's see what we can find.... Reference a-go-go. Hmmmm. Amazingly nothing obvious is popping up. The official O'Hare website has a little bit on Butch O'Hare, after whom the airport is named. Originally it was called Orchard Field. Again - airplanes and lots of trees seems like it was a bad idea from the start. Ahh and our old friend Wikipedia to the rescue.

History of Chicago O'Hare

Again proving that librarians kick ass. O'Hare Digital Collection - Bensenville Public Library

Hmm. Well that answers some questions. Apparently the Army folks who came out to survey did study the "wind conditions" blah. blah. Me thinks there's a political subtext to this that isn't jumping out here.

Well, alsmost time to go. Our plane has finally arrived. Thanks for flying with us. Please return you seats and tray tables to their full upright position.

Blah! I am also taking CU taxi!

And FYI Chicago is NOT the windy city because of weather. The moniker refers to its politicians.

Politicians and airplanes probably shouldn't mix either.
